I love this show as much as the next mythology nerd, but there's something you need to know about me: I'm very picky. What does that have to do with anything, you may ask, and you'd have a point, but I promise it's related. How so? Well, I can tell pretty fast when they are actively choosing to be inaccurate. Am I going to go on a rant about that? Absolutely not. Besides, all productions about mythology are plagued with inconsistencies and inaccuracies. At this point, I'm just happy they're being made at all. The same thing happened to me while watching The Odyssey, and I still found a way to enjoy it. Besides, if I started picking apart one by one all the incorrect details (starting with the fact that the entrance to Mount Olympus is in the U.S.- what was that, Rick?), we would be here eternally, and you'd be wondering if I actually like the show, which I do. Still, there's one detail that I can't seem to get over from the last season.
Remember when Percy and Annabeth were stuck on Circe's Island? Well, they had to face the sirens to escape. I was excited about that moment, because I didn't know if they were planning on keeping them mythologically accurate (bird-shaped, I mean), or if they were going to go with the modern interpretation and just turn them into mermaids. For real, I would have been fine with either of them, especially because I know that when you say ‘Siren,’ most people think about a woman who's half fish, so it would have been a more familiar image. But no, they went with those weird rock-like beings as the sirens. I have to say, that one disappointed me. I don't know if I'll ever get over that one detail (for some reason I'm obsessed with Sirens; that's why it hurt so much), but I know that regardless of how many mythological inaccuracies they throw into the show, I will keep enjoying the adventures and the fantasy of secretly being a child of the Olympians.
